How to Score Stylish Prescription Glasses and Sunnies on a Budget: The Insider's Guide

Woman in glasses
My Love for Eyewear

Finding affordable prescription glasses and sunnies that are stylish can often feel like an uphill battle. The endless choices in frames, lenses, and prices can be overwhelming. However, you're in the right place! This guide will help you navigate the world of eyewear while keeping your budget in check.

A great pair of glasses not only improves your vision but also showcases your unique style. So, let’s dive into how to score trendy glasses and sunglasses without spending a fortune!

Understanding Prescription Glasses and Sunnies

The eyewear world can seem complicated. For example, single-vision lenses are designed for one field of vision, while multifocal lenses are made for both distance and near sight. I, myself, am near-sighted which means I need glasses to see when driving or seeing distances. Always consult your optometrist to understand your specific lens requirements. I have a low co-pay through insurance but do know that both Walmart & Costco have affordable eye care. The glasses are the challenge because how do you find a pair that's stylish, has options AND is under $100?

Where to Shop for Affordable Eyewear

When it comes to shopping for stylish and affordable prescription glasses and sunnies, you have a wealth of choices. Here are some suggested shopping avenues:

Online Retailers

Online optical retailers have transformed eyewear shopping. Websites like Zenni Optical, Warby Parker, and EyeBuyDirect feature attractive options at significantly lower prices. For example, prices on Zenni can start as low as $6.95 for basic frames. I have religiously purchased my sunglasses and eyeglasses from Zenni over the past several years. Pictured above are my absolute favorite go-to black frames which are still available for on their website, and that's incredible because I've had these since 2014! Shop those here and if you're reading this before 11/24/24 they're currently offering a BOGO sale of 40% off a second pair.

I have a plethora of my favorites at Zenni both sunglasses and regular, feel free to get inspo from my personal loved list here.

Shopping online allows you to compare styles, read customer reviews, and often utilize virtual try-on tools to see how frames look on your face before purchase. This is my preferred way to shop for eyewear other than designer glasses which we will talk about next.

Thrift and Online Pre-Loved Retailers

Online thrift stores can be treasure troves for budget-friendly designer sunglasses and possibly even prescription frames. I did score some Gucci frames from The RealReal with tags, I just have to get them filled which costs about $150 at WalMart. While luck can play a role here, you might stumble upon unique vintage frames or trendy options for a fraction of their original cost as well. Poshmark and Ebay will have options too, if you can score a pair with tags they make for great holiday gifts!

Here are some of my favorite brands to look for on The RealReal.

Local Optical Stores

Never overlook your local optical stores! Many have affordable frames and clearance sections. You can also inquire about current promotions, which sometimes cater to first-time buyers. Interacting with store staff can provide personalized advice to help you find the perfect frames if you're unsure what looks right on your specific face shape.

Seasonal Sales

Be on the lookout for seasonal sales and major shopping days. Events like Black Friday or post-holiday sales can offer staggering discounts on eyewear; you're likely to find deals upwards of 50% off during these times. Like I mentioned before with the Zenni BOGO sale, or keep checking back on Cyber Monday, it's a great time to stock up on new frames.

Features to Consider

When searching for stylish and budget-friendly prescription eyewear, consider the following important features:

Lens Type

Different lenses come with varying price points. Typically, single vision lenses are the most affordable, costing around $100 or less. In contrast, multifocal or progressive lenses may exceed $200 due to their complexity.

Tailor your lens choice to your lifestyle needs. For example, if you need reading glasses, simpler single vision lenses may suffice.

Frame Material

The frame material impacts both the cost and durability of your glasses. Plastic frames are often less expensive than metal ones; trendy options are available in both materials. If you frequently drop your glasses, look for flexible plastic frames that can withstand everyday wear and tear.

UV Protection

When purchasing sunglasses, consider they provide 100% UV protection. This feature is critical for preventing long-term eye damage, such as cataracts but does costs a bit more to add on.

Style

Choose a style that captures your vibe. Whether you prefer classic designs or trendy statements, your eyewear should reflect your personality. The right colors and shapes can also enhance your overall look. I just noticed that Zenni currently has a cottage-core section! It's like they know me or something, lol.

The Importance of Proper Fit

A crucial yet often ignored aspect of eyewear shopping is fit. Well-fitted glasses contribute to comfort and effectiveness. When trying on frames, check the following:

Check the Size

Frames should fit snugly but not too tight; they should not slide down your nose or pinch your temples. An ideal fit will feel comfortable during everyday activities.

Evaluate the Position

Make sure your pupils are centered in the lens when wearing frames. Often, an optical professional can make adjustments to ensure the best fit and most eyewear sites have a PD online measuring tool you can ensure you get the right fit.

Caring for Your Glasses

After finding the ideal prescription glasses or sunnies, proper care is vital for longevity and functionality.

Cleaning

Use a microfiber cloth and specialized lens cleaner to keep your glasses clear and free from scratches. Avoid using clothing or paper towels, which may damage your lenses.

Storage

When your glasses are not in use, store them in a protective case. This simple action prevents accidental damage and scratches when they’re tossed into your bag. I have an awesome organizer for all of my glasses I got for under $30 and has been a game-changer in keeping them in the best shape.
