DIY Detachable Collars: Add a Touch of Flair to Any Outfit

Detachable collars are a fantastic way to add personality and style to your wardrobe without committing to a whole new garment. They're versatile, easy to make, and can instantly transform a simple outfit. Here's a step-by-step guide to crafting your own DIY detachable collars:

What You'll Need:

  • Fabric: Choose a fabric that complements your style. Lace, velvet, cotton, and even leather can all be used. In last week's vlog, I went thrifting and found an entire bag of Autumn and Halloween fabric remnants, which is what I used for mine.

  • Second layers: This will give your collar structure, prevent it from flopping, and make it reversible for versatility.

  • Pattern: You can draft your pattern or find free templates online. I used Dr.Cos but it is in Japanese so I merely used it for the free printout pattern and had to figure out the rest on my own. I have a short instructional video below of how I made it.

  • Printer:  You can use a printer to print out your pattern online, then tape the pieces together like a little puzzle and continue to re-use it each time.

  • Scissors

  • Pins

  • Sewing machine

  • Trim (optional): Lace, ribbon, beads, or anything else you'd like to use to embellish your collar.

  • Closure: Buttons, snaps, or hooks and eyes. I used a little ribbon tie.

Instructions:

  1. Prepare your pattern: If you're using a template, print it out and cut it to the desired size. If you're drafting your own, measure your neckline and sketch the collar shape you want.

  2. Cut your fabric: Place your pattern on the fabric and cut two identical pieces, leaving a seam allowance of about 1/4 inch.

  3. Apply interfacing: Follow the manufacturer's instructions to fuse the interfacing to the wrong side of one fabric piece.

  4. Sew the collar: Pin the two fabric pieces together, right sides facing. Sew along the edges, leaving a small opening for turning. I left the opening in the center and then sewed that shut after flipping right-side out.

  5. Turn and press: Turn the collar right side out through the opening. Use a pointed tool to push out the corners. Press the collar flat.

  6. Finish the edges: To give the collar a more polished look, you can hand-stitch the opening closed or topstitch around the entire collar.

  7. Add trim (optional): Sew on any embellishments you desire.

  8. Attach the closure: Sew buttons, snaps, or hooks and eyes to the collar ends.

Tips and Ideas:

  • Experiment with shapes: Peter Pan, pointed, rounded, ruffled – the possibilities are endless!

  • Upcycle old clothes: Give new life to old shirts or blouses by using their collars as a base.

  • Get creative with embellishments: Embroidery, appliqués, and even painted designs can add a unique touch.

  • Make a statement: Use bold colors, contrasting fabrics, or eye-catching trims to create a collar that stands out.

Inspiration:

  • Vintage collars: Look to vintage fashion for inspiration, like the elegant lace collars of the Victorian era or the sharp pointed collars of the 1960s.

  • Pinterest and Instagram: These platforms are treasure troves of DIY collar ideas.

With a little creativity and effort, you can create a collection of detachable collars to suit any mood or occasion. Happy crafting!
